Coddington Mill, Chester

The Lakehouse is a unique cabin, nestled beside a small lake within the grounds of grade II listed Coddington Mill. Whether you visit for a night, a romantic weekend or a week away from it all, The Lakehouse is a perfect retreat for two.

The interior is an open-plan space of rich, dark wood and pale fabric accents. The big bed sits by the large round window and the comfy corner sofa faces the wood burner and kitchen, which is fully equipped with hobs and a fridge freezer. In winter, it’s a place to stretch out with a book and watch the logs glowing gently on the fire. In summer, fold the doors right back, feel the breeze flow in and pad barefoot from the deck to the fridge, if you haven’t just hung a bottle of wine down into the cool water. At any time, the copper bath out on the deck is a spectacular spot to steam and soak yourself in the hot water and the restorative sights and sounds of the country.

Canopy and stars

This really is the idyllic waterside retreat you’ve always dreamed of. The sense that it’s been lived in and loved for years, gathering a natural collection of art and artifacts, instantly puts you at ease.

You’ll be barefoot on the balcony minutes after you arrive, sipping a glass of something local from the dresser that groans with a selection of “welcome gins”. The kitchen has all the basics arranged around a big mahogany island, so you can cook up a great meal before slumping onto the window seat or the corner sofa by the wood burner. If you don’t fancy cooking, then you can kayak round the corner for lunch, because despite a feeling of being hidden in the trees above the water, the Boathouse is just a few minutes paddle from Kingsbridge and Salcombe, where you can moor up and head to one of several cafes and restaurants.
